The following are some tips for taking care of your feet.

  1. Don`t ignore foot pain. It`s not normal for one to be in foot pain. If the pain persists, contact the podiatrist's office.
  2. Inspect your feet on a regular basis.
  3. Check for any changes in temperature as well as color.
  4. Inspect for thick or discolored nails -- a symptom of fungal infection.
  5. Check for cracks or cuts in the skin. Peeling or scaling on the soles of feet may be a symptom of Athlete`s foot.
  6. Any growth on the foot is not considered normal.
  7. Wash your feet often, especially between the toes, and make sure to dry them completely.
  8. Trim toenails straight across, and not too short. Be careful not to cut nails in curved corners or on the sides -- doing so may lead to ingrown toenails.
  9. If you have diabetes, poor blood circulation or heart conditions, you should not treat your own feet as they are more prone to infections.
  10. Choose properly-fitted shoes. Purchase new shoes later in the day when feet tend to be more swollen. Don't wear shoes that are worn out.
  11. Wear the right shoe for your activities (i.e. running shoes for running).
  12. Don't walk barefeet as that makes your feet will be more prone to injury and infection.
  13. Use sunblock on your feet as the rest of your body when you're out in the sun.
  14. Be cautious when self-treating using home remedies for foot conditions as it can often turn minor issues into major ones.
  15. If you are a diabetic, visit the podiatrist regularly for proper foot care.
